The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called a bandh (shutdown) on Friday to protest the hike in bus and Metro fares and the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

“The common man is suffering. We are appealing to all sections of society, including traders, industrialists, workers and students to support the bandh to protest Delhi government’s anti-people policies,” said V.K. Malhotra, leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly.

Malhotra, however, promised that his party will “ensure that essential services like public transport and medical facilities are not disrupted in any way and the public is not inconvenienced”.

The police have made adequate arrangements to maintain normalcy in the city.

Praveen Khandelwal, general secretary of the Confederation of All-India Traders said all major wholesale and retail markets would remain shut on Friday.

“The government’s negligence to check prices of essential commodities is encouraging profiteering and hoarding. The government has become despotic and has completely disassociated itself from curbing the price rise,” he alleged.

Khandelwal said all major wholesale and retail markets of Delhi, including Chandni Chowk, Bhagirath Place, Sadar Bazar, Kamla Nagar, Rohini, Karol Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Janakpuri, Lajpat Nagar, South Extension, Greater Kailash, Yusuf Sarai, Green Park, Mehrauli, Kalkaji, will remain closed.
