BJP defers decision on Khanduri's fate
In a bid to avoid fresh factional feud ahead of crucial assembly by-poll next week, BJP today deferred a decision on the fate of Uttarakhand Chief Minister B C Khanduri who has offered to quit in the wake of the party's rout in Lok Sabha elections in the state.
The decision was taken by the BJP Parliamentary Board at a meeting here.
The Board was briefed on the political situation in Uttarakhand, where the party lost all the five LS seats, by central observers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Thavar Chand Gehlot who returned from the state earlier in the day after interacting with the party's 34 MLAs.
"Today only the detailed report was heard by the Parliamentary Board. No further discussion on it was held," BJP General Secretary Arun Jaitley told reporters after the meeting.
The decision was deferred keeping in mind the by-poll to Kapkot assembly seat on May 28. The seat, vacated by Khanduri's rival B S Koshiyari after he was elected to the Rajya Sabha, is crucial as the BJP has a slender majority in the assembly which has an effective strength of 68. By-elections to another seat, Vikasnagar, will be held later.
