Vijendra Gupta, member and ex-Chairman of MCD Standing Committee has written a letter to the Lt Governor, requesting him to ensure that the Independence Day function is shifted to some other venue.

"Even as AIFF continues to work for sprucing up the Ambedkar Stadium, the venue is simultaneously being prepared to hold Delhi Government's Independence Day celebrations," Gupta said.

The Chhatrasal Stadium used to be the venue for the celebration but it is unavailable due to renovations for Commonwealth Games.

Gupta said that it will adversely effect and reduce the quality of turf that will host the six-team tournament starting from August 18.

"This kind of anti-sports attitude is deplorable," he said. The Independence Day celebrations can be held at a number of other venues including the Police Line Ground at Kingsway Camp, he said.
