BJP seeks PM's justification on Tytler case

BJP on Saturday condemns the closure of a 1984 anti-Sikh riot case against senior Congress leader and former union minister Jagdish Tytler by CBI.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday condemned the closure of a 1984 anti-Sikh riot case against senior Congress leader and former union minister Jagdish Tytler by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), saying the probe agency had become a "tool" to save the Congress and its leaders.

Party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad has sought from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the justification for closing the case.

"The CBI has become a tool to save the Congress and its leaders. The Nanavati Commission probing the anti-Sikh riots had received adverse information on the role of the Congressmen Tytler, Sajjan Kumar and Dharam Das Shastri. Following the furore on the Action Taken Report (ATR) in the Parliament in which it had been said that nothing needs to be done, the prime minister had said that no one would be spared and had sent the case to the CBI. We demand from him that how does he justify this acquittal by the CBI," said Prasad.

The case against Tytler and Shastri has reportedly been closed by the CBI, saying that it was unable to find witnesses to support its charges against him.

Meanwhile the Congress refrained from reacting to the allegations of the BJP.

Without elaborating, party spokesperson M Veerappa Moily said: "The CBI has its own legacy and credibility."
