Hindustan Times had first reported on Wednesday that Kalmadi had found a slot in the parliamentary committee. DMK's A Raja - another tainted MP - too got a berth in the energy committee.

"The decision to nominate Kalmadi to the standing committee was taken by Sonia Gandhi," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

On its part, the Congress saw nothing wrong in the duo's inclusion. "It is the right of an MP to be on a panel, whatever may be the charges or allegations. The members are not nominated by their parties," Congress spokesperson PC Chacko said.

Asked if the Congress could tell the controversial members like Kalmadi not to accept a parliamentary committee membership, he said, "I don't think that the party can do it. It is a privilege."
