Candlelight protest to flay journalist’s arrest

The protest was organised to condemn the arrest of journalist Syed Mohammed Kazmi in connection with the bombing of an Israeli diplomat’s car.

An Urdu journalist, Kazmi, a resident of BK Dutt Colony, worked with several news organisations, including the national broadcaster Doordarshan.

Kazmi’s family, however, still has a strong belief in the system. “He is innocent and should be released immediately,” said Kazmi’s wife Jahanara before she broke into tears.

More than 500 people participated in the peaceful protest organised by the family and friends of Kazmi for his early release.

“The government has succumbed to international pressure and the wrong guy has been arrested. There is no evidence against Kazmi. The ground on which he has been arrested is very fragile,” said Zafarul Islam, editor of the Mili Gazette, a Muslim newspaper published from Jamia Nagar.

Kazmi was picked up by the Delhi Police on March 6 while he was returning home from the India Islamic Cultural Centre.
