CBI registers case against senior FCI officials for graft

CBI has registered a corruption case against eight officials, including a general manager, of Food Corporation of India (FCI), Tamil Nadu for allegedly accepting bribe.

The officials against whom the case has been registered include General Manager Jayakumar, Deputy General Manager Durairaj of FCI's regional office in Chennai and six area managers C S Kumar (Chennai), Soundiram (Vellore), Vellimalayam (Coimbatore), Panneerselvam (Thanjavur), Chandramohandas (Cuddalore) and Jagannathan (Tuticorin), sources said.

"On the basis of reliable information that huge amounts of illegal gratification is being received by the general manager and deputy general manager during the monthly review meetings with the area managers, CBI conducted a surprise check at the Regional Office of FCI, Chennai.

"All the six area managers posted at Chennai, Vellore, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tuticorin and Coimbatore admitted to have paid regular illegal gratification to the general manager and deputy general manager to ensure smooth running of their offices, and for avoiding frequent transfers and harassments," a CBI spokesperson here said.

He said, "an amount of Rs 1.05 lakh received as illegal gratification by the general manager from various area managers and kept in separate envelopes was also recovered."
