A day after DMK chief M Karunanidhi blamed the Congress for his daughter Kanimozhi’s arrest, the party said while it shared his agony, it was helpless as the issue lay in the domain of probe agencies.

Health minister and AICC leader in charge of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh Ghulam Nabi Azad claimed that the Congress-DMK relations were “good” and two parties have stood by each other through thick and thin.

“We share Karunanidhi’s agony. One can imagine the agony of a father whose daughter is in jail. He is upset. But the government has no role. We could not have done anything…Our party MP (Suresh Kalmadi) is also in jail (over the Commonwealth Games),” he told women scribes at the Indian Women’s Press Corps on Monday.

Azad said the Congress had rejected AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa’s pre-poll overtures as it didn’t want an “opportunistic” alliance even though it knew that state does not elect an incumbent government.

Azad claimed that if the Ramdev episode had not happened, discussions on the Telangana issue could have started as he had consulted various stakeholders.

“Once this is over, we’ll start looking at how to go about it,” he said, accusing the BJP of backing Ramdev to get political mileage.
