“The entire building has been razed and as a preventive measure, certain areas in the adjacent building will also be broken down,” said a senior MCD official.

A four-storey building located in the main Maliwada area near the Nai Sarak went up in flames caused by a short circuit on Sunday evening.
It housed a plastic godown on its ground floor from where two cylinder bursts were reported to have aggravated the blaze.

“Four firemen and an officer from the local police were injured in the fire. It took nearly 24 hours to bring the fire under control. One of the injured was rushed to the LNJP hospital with 75% burns and the other at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital where is undergoing treatment for multiple fractures,” said a senior Delhi Police officer.

Police said the building was evacuated immediately. Over 70 fire tenders were on duty between 4.30pm on Sunday to 5.30pm on Monday when the fire was finally put out.

“The entire Nai Sarak area was cordoned off for the public till 3 pm. But since demolition work was on till after 5 pm, no one was allowed to
enter the Maliwada area,” an officer said.
