In yet another instance of Chinese assertiveness along the LAC, a patrolling party of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) attempted to scale a 250-metre wall on the Indian side, defence minister AK Antony told Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The incident took place on July 13, 2011 in Yangtse sector of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

India has lodged a strong protest with Beijing to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Antony said Indian troops prevented the Chinese patrol from crossing the wall made of loose stones.

He said the wall was partially damaged by the PLA but reconstructed by the Indian Army. Similar incidents have taken place in the Ladakh sector in the past.

“As per the established mechanism with China, a strong protest was lodged with the Chinese side on the action of the PLA patrol in a flag meeting,” Antony said.

“Both sides patrol up to their respective perceptions of the LAC due to perceived differences in the alignment of LAC,” Antony said.
