Cong councillors toe party line, BJP cries foul

While the BJP councillors are accusing the government of using the excuse of Commonwealth Games to
take over the civic agency, Congress councillors have decided to abide by their party’s decision.
“We haven’t received an official notification. Once we do, we will go and meet home minister and the chief minister to oppose it,” said Ram Kishan Singhal, chairman of the standing committee of the MCD.
According to the BJP councillors, all the prominent CWG projects are with the Centre and they are trying to shift the blame on to the civic agency.
“The Delhi government is planning to hold MCD responsible for its failure on all fronts — power, water, sewerage. We are often blamed for anything and everything, be it traffic jams, sewerage, waterlogging or anything. But waterlogging is seen more on PWD, NDMC roads and area under the DMRC. DJB does not clean sewer system leading to water-logging,” said Subhash Arya, leader of the MCD house.
He added that the Delhi government had never made such a demand of taking over the corporation in the past 11 years.
The Congress councillors, who had given a memorandum to Chief Minister Sheila
Dikshit requesting her not to split the civic body a few months ago, have decided to go by their party’s decision
this time.
“We will do as our party demands. The Delhi government is quite right in saying that the MCD has failed in improving the state of the city in terms of road infrastructure, providing parking facilities, etc.,” said J.K. Sharma, opposition leader in the MCD.
BJP councillors have termed the move of the Delhi government “politically motivated”.
“The state feels overshadowed by the MCD and that's why it wants direct control of the corporation,” said BJP councillor Vijendra Gupta.
