Congress edge in race for mayor’s election
Having an edge in deciding the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), the Congress party is making all efforts to win the support of 17 councillors required to ensure the victory of its candidate for the top post in the civic body.

Out of total number of 35 wards, 25 independent candidates won the first MCG election held on Sunday.
BJP has won 4 seats while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) got six seats in its favour. The Congress, though supported many independent contestants indirectly, did not allow them to use the party symbol.
Congress would require 21 votes to prove majority out of 40 votes that includes 35 municipal councillors, four MLAs and one MP. The party has three MLAs from Gurgaon, Badshahpur and Sohna in the state assembly and a member of parliament (MP) elected from Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency. The INLD has only one MLA from Pataudi assembly seat.
“Therefore, we require 17 winners from the lot of 25 independents which we will get easily. We already have three MLAs — Rao Dhatrampal from Badshahpur, Dharambir from Sohna and Sukhbir Singh from Gurgaon — who are going to vote for the Congress-backed contender for the mayor's post,” said Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh.
He said, “I have already held talks with Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. We are soon going to meet and discuss the methodology to decide our candidate for the mayor’s post.”
According to sources, INLD with six councillors has also begun talking of possible alliances to garner support of 14 candidates as they also have one member in the state assembly. BJP with just four councillors has no say in the election of the mayor.
Sources added that some successful candidates were also getting offers through “mediators”.
The winners, however, preferred to remain mum for now.
