Vikas Maan, an MBA, was at the wheel of the vehicle (HR 10 R 9860) when it climbed a divider, hit the railing and rammed a streetlight before overturning and skidding at least 100 metres before coming to rest.
Maan, whose father BR Maan is currently the assistant commissioner of police (Patel Nagar), was employed with a private company. On Thursday night, he was on his way from Pashchim Vihar to Ashok Vihar for dinner along with five of his friends.
The fathers of three of the six men in the group are with the Delhi police.
“After visiting a sports club in Pashchim Vihar, the group decided to go for a dinner to Ashok Vihar. Around 10.30pm, the car reached the market in front of the Ashok Vihar police station,” a senior police officer said.
Witnesses told the police that the Scorpio was speeding and had attempted overtaking a truck just before a traffic light. Maan apparently lost balance trying to avoid hitting a cyclist. “The driver lost balance and climbed the divider and hit the railing,” the officer added.
