On Tuesday, the seventh day of the Traffic police’s drive to enforce lane driving on 15 select corridors in the city, around 428 motorists were fined. Over the last seven days, the police have fined 5,814 motorists for lane violations.

The Traffic Police began enforcing the lane driving rule after its success during the Commonwealth Games.

“We are educating motorists at our level but will write to the civic agencies to install signboards and road markings as were used during the Games,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

Initially, police were educating the motorists but now they have started imposing fines on the defaulters.

HT had reported on November 18 that traffic police was planning to implement the project in Delhi.

Police said that though they have selected 15 arterial

stretches for a pilot project, they will take time to implement it in the city.

“We don’t have a huge police force and the capacity to implement it across Delhi. As of now we are implementing it on select corridors,” said the officer.

Young policemen have been moved to traffic police to enforce lane driving.

“These young policemen on motorcycles chase the offenders and fine them on the spot,” said the officer.

According to police, last week they added five more corridors to the existing 10 after it was found to be successful.
