Cops on track of missing criminals

This includes reward for the police personnel who apprehend a proclaimed offender.

From Rs 500 - Rs 700 at present, the reward has been enhanced to Rs 10,000 for nabbing those involved in dacoity, robbery, murder, kidnapping for ransom and burglary and to Rs 5,000 for those accused of offences like snatching and theft.

About 4,777 of the 13,521 missing are those wanted in offences like murder, rape and narcotics-related offences in which punishment is seven years or more. Special teams have been formed in each district to apprehend them by deputing special teams on trial basis for six months.

In an affidavit, Mangesh Kashyap, DCP (Headquarters) said details of POs from all the police stations in Delhi have been listed as per their native states, irrespective of the police station in Delhi under which they had committed the crime.

The court was appraised of this by Mangesh Kashyap, DCP (Headquarters) through an affidavit. A Bench of Justice A.K. Sikri and Ajit Bharihoke is trying to put in place a system to nab the POs after raising concerns over large number of them in pending criminal cases in Delhi.

The court was dealing with a case where a murder accused absconded after securing bail during the trial and could not be traced for ten years.

The Bench is of the view that till now, there was lack of serious effort on the part of the police in tracking down the POs.
