"In the name of Commonwealth Games, open corruption by the good wishes of UPA Government is unfortunate for the country ...stringent action is required on the issue of corruption," BJP President Nitin Gadkari told reporters in New Delhi.

He said those involved in corruption in CWG projects had "political backing" and said the UPA government "cannot shirk from its responsibility".

Had the Prime Minister taken action on a CAG report submitted to him long back, "the present situation would not have arisen," Gadkari said.

The BJP chief said his party was not opposed to the Games as they were associated with the prestige of the country but said the cases of corruption has brought India "international disrepute".

Asked about the persons responsible for alleged corruption, he said the Centre, Delhi Government and Suresh Kalmadi-led Organising Committee had carried out various tasks for preparation of the Games.
