CPI-M tells its cadre to make a poll strategy

The decision, taken by the party Central Committee, came weeks ahead of reports suggesting that the government was in no hurry to convene the Monsoon Session of Parliament which was likely to be convened around second week of September when the Indo-US nuclear deal was expected to go through.

The Central Committee, which met about two weeks ago, was of the assessment that though the UPA won the trust vote, it would find it difficult to run the government smoothly because of coalition compulsions and the prospects of early elections in October-November could not be ruled out.

The instruction to identify the constituencies from where the party should field candidates was circulated to the state units in 'Note on Current Situation and Our Approach: Adopted by the Central Committee'.

In a section dealing with the 'Political and Forthcoming Elections', the CPI-M said it would have to "work to isolate BJP which spearheads the communal forces and also oppose the Congress which has been instrumental in forging a strategic alliance with the US and following neo-liberal policies."

On entering into a tie-up with other parties, the central leadership cautioned state units that its attitude to non-Congress and non-BJP parties should be determined by their attitude towards the leaders of UPA and NDA.
