Residents of the Capital, mostly east Delhi, now have a plush new sports complex that offers state-of-the-art facilities at affordable rates.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) fully opened the Commonwealth Games Village sports complex for the public on Friday. Hindustan Times was the first to report that the sports complex, the opening of which had been running into delays for about two-and-a-half years, would finally open on March 1. The football ground and athletic track at the complex were opened to the public in July last year.

The 21-acre sports complex boasts of state-of-the-art sports equipment brought for international athletes staying at the village for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The complex offers basketball and table tennis courts, cricket ground, a world-class gymnasium and fitness centre, a spacious centre for Yoga and aerobics, sauna and swimming pools. A facility for billiards and snooker is ready and will open shortly. The complex will have a golf driving range, a children's corner and tennis, basketball and volleyball courts.

The complex has a sauna, which only DDA's Vasant Kunj sport complex currently boasts of. The sauna will be opened only if a substantial number of users show interest because of the cost involved.

"People can use any facility on 'pay and play' basis and we have not started giving memberships yet," said Col. (Retd.) SP Thapliyal, secretary of the complex. "Most facilities are ready and the swimming pools will be opened when the season begins. More facilities will be added very soon," he said.

The charges vary between Rs 50 and Rs 60 per hour (jogging, athletic tracks, table tennis per court) to Rs 180-R200 (gymnasium, badminton court per court). Charges for using the football field is Rs 700 per hour. The field can be booked for six hours at the cost of Rs 15,000. Discounts, however, are available for schools and colleges for team games.

The sports complex at the CWG Village was expected to be opened for the public after the Games in October 2010. However, delayed work on the renovation of the facilities, preparing of the cricket pitch, fencing work, etc., meant that it could be only opened partially, two years after the sporting event.

The expensive sporting equipment had been gathering dust since then and the halls inside the complex were used to store furniture from the flats in the village.
