Looking for a wedding venue in Delhi is going to become easier in a few years. That is, if you fancy a multistorey wedding hall or a fixed pipe structure for a customised shamiana of your choice.
Booking a venue for a wedding is an expensive and Herculean task in Delhi, especially during the wedding season. To provide more options to Delhiites, which would be affordable too, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is going to build multistorey wedding halls in the city, along with temporary structures that can be turned into customised ‘pandals’.
The existing grounds of the DDA face a stranglehold of the tent mafia that erect permanent shamianas at these venues and then force people to hire them at exorbitant rates.
“Multi-storey wedding venues, known as Kalyan Mandapams, and temporary sheds can help curb the menace of tent mafias,” said a senior DDA official who didn’t wish to be named.
Kalyan Mandapams are popular wedding venues in southern states such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, where people can book these buildings that provide all facilities under one roof.
“One such multi-storey venue will be able to accommodate three to four weddings at a time,” said the official. “The basement will be reserved for parking and the other floors will have separate wedding halls and dining areas. There would be state-of-the-art kitchens to prepare food for guests,” he said.
Rooms will also be available for guests to stay. “We are coming up with two venues each at Rohini, Dwarka, east Delhi and north zones and one in south zone,” he said. “The charges for these venues will be a few thousand rupees.”
At wedding grounds, the DDA is coming up with temporary “sheds” to discourage tentwallahs from putting up permanent shamianas.
“There would be a permanent pipe structures at these grounds and people can put up tents on these as per their choice and budget,” he said. “We plan to build two such structures in each zone and the first one is coming up at Shahdara.”
