Minister of Health and Family Welfare Kiran Walia said she has directed concerned authorities to enforce provision of the Pre Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection), Act, 1994.

Walia, while addressing a workshop, said the authorities have already filed 58 cases against violators in various courts.

She said the Director of Family Welfare has been appointed as State Appropriate Authority to enforce the law while Divisional Commissioners will head the Appropriate Authority at division level.

The Deputy Commissioners of all the districts have been made District Appropriate Authorities to enforce the Act.

The minister said the authorities will conduct raids at ultrasound centres and seal them if they are found violating the norms.

As per PC and PNDT Act, 1994 any person found guilty can be imprisoned for five yers and a financial penalty of Rs one lakh can be imposed on him.
