Eight of India’s 10 dirtiest hotels are in Delhi, says a respected worldwide travel guide. They include some five-star hotels such as the Ashok and Centaur.
The web-based guide, TripAdvisor, used around 20 million reviews and comments by travellers for its widely popular rating of hotels all around the world, including India’s dirtiest 10.
“We have had the dirtiest award category for some years now, but it has been introduced for the first time in India,” said
Sharat Dhall, MD, TripAdvisor India. “We have discovered that some hotels take the concept of offering dirt-cheap rooms all too literally. Guests have penned reviews like “It is better to live on the street than the room here.”
Here is what a traveller wrote about Ashok Hotel: “There were stains on the towels and shower curtains. Our friends from Kenya were met with unacceptable racism from the hotel’s club.”
Ashok reacted angrily to the rating. “I feel that the rankings are not credible since they are the opinions of a few users on the Internet,” said general manager S.K. Sibal.
But Rajendera Kumar, Vice President of the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India, said, “To a great extent, the survey could be correct.”
He added that the hotels would do well to use the findings as an “eye opener”.
