The court sought its response on a PIL alleging that "unhygienic food was being supplied to passengers" and that "railway failed to remove the contractors who have been defaulters and was thereby causing revenue loss".
"Is it not part of your (railways ministry's) governance? The petitioner has questioned your fiscal policy," a bench of chief justice Dipak Misra and justice Sanjiv Khanna told the lawyer presenting the railways ministry.
Your officers are protecting their own people in the catering service. The issues raised are serious," the bench added.
Issuing notices to the ministry of railways and Indian Railway Catering Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the bench asked the chairman of Railway Board to file the response by April.
