'Delhi terror attack planned to avenge Afzal Guru'

The Delhi Police said today said the alleged Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist was instructed by his handlers in Pakistan to find targets in Delhi where fidayeen attack could be carried out.

The alleged operative Liaqat Ali was on way to Delhi in a train when he was arrested from Gorakhpur, police said.

He was arrested from Uttar Pradesh with police Friday claiming that they have unearthed a plot to create terror in the national capital ahead of Holi.

SN Srivastava, Special Commissioner, Delhi Police said that the Hizbul operative was instructed to reach Delhi and select targets to hit in order to avenge Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging.

Srivastava told a press conference that Liaqat was given Pakistani passport and told to destroy it when in Kathmandu.

He has been crossing the border every now and then and it is clear that he was being trained in Pakistan and was sent by Pakistani agencies.

"We found hand grenades, high explosive plastics, rifle, maps and dry fruits in the operative's hotel room," Srivastava added.

He was produced in a court Thursday which sent him to police custody for 15 days.

During interrogation, the man confessed that a bomb blast in Delhi was being planned. He also told them that some weapons were kept for him in a guest house in a Central Delhi locality.

Going by the man's confessional statement, police were able to recover one AK-47 and some explosives from the Jama Masjid area in Delhi.
