Delhi zoo to gain from German practices

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA), the regulatory body for all zoos across India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Leipzig Zoo, a German zoo located at Pfaddendorfer on 'Zoo Conservation Management' on Saturday.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA), the regulatory body for all zoos across India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Leipzig Zoo, a German zoo located at Pfaddendorfer on 'Zoo Conservation Management' on Saturday.

Delhi zoo and five other zoos from India are partners to the CZA for implementing the MoU to improve, develop and implement future strategies in the fields of capacity building and exchange of manpower, scientific animal exchanges, training programmes for zoo supervisors and lastly, research and conservation breeding programmes.

"Zoos can play a unique role in conservation and specially to raise awareness for biodiversity," said Jorg Junhold, director Leipzig Zoo. BS Bonal, CZA member secretary, said, "Apart from improvement in the conservation management practices, the MoU will also open up options for a larger selection of animals from Germany for exchange with Indian zoos."

Said Dr Brij Kishor Gupta, evaluation and monitoring officer, CZA, "We aim to improve the cooperation about the management of captive animals."

Delhi to host WAZA 2014
Delhi zoo will host the annual conference of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in 2014, said Jorg Junhold, WAZA president. WAZA is a gathering of zoo professionals from across the world.
