A number of cops posted at different locations like Metro and bus stands, railway stations, traffic, venues and other locations were on duty when the opening ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium last night.

"I wanted to see the ceremony. But I could not reach home on time to see it," said a Delhi Police inspector, posted at the Commonwealth Games Village here for security, requesting anonymity.

"However I tried to see some moments of the Opening Ceremony on a LCD screen here," he said.

Head Constable Rakesh Kumar, who was posted at the JLN stadium on Sunday, said "I could hear the loud music from outside. It would have really been interesting. Though I am a little disappointed at missing it but more happy to be a part of security mechanism.

"It is even happier to see safe and secure Games," a confident Rakesh said.

Most of the over 600 personnel deployed to protect the Commonwealth Games Village, where about 7,000 athletes of 71 nations are living, also expressed disappointment at missing yesterday's ceremony.

"I wanted to see it. But job is first priority. I could not get free on time due to the hectic schedule and had to miss it. But I have no regret," said Bhure Lal, Assistant Sub Inspector.

The 19th Commonwealth Games would conclude on October 14.

"I am happily doing my duty. One cannot expect an easy life while such a big event is on. I saw some glimpses of yesterday's event on the television," said sub inspector Mohan Singh.

Over one lakh personnel including central paramilitary forces have been put on security related duty for the mega sporting extravaganza.

"It happens most of the time. We miss festivals, anniversaries and other important events due to our job. Even our family life gets disturbed. But this is how a policeman is supposed to work. Afterall it's a matter of country's pride," said Constable Ravi, who made it to Delhi Police last year.
