Ghaziabad is a major convergence point for Kanwarias en-route Haridwar in Uttarakhand.

There will be major diversions on NH-58 and all major traffic will be diverted to NH-24 for commuters travelling to Meerut and beyond.

During the Kanwar procession, the devotees, dressed in saffron clothes, fetch Ganga water from Haridwar and travel on foot back to their respective homes.

The officials estimate that around 50 lakh devotees are expected to cross the district on their way back to their homes in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and other states.

As part of the plan, the Ghaziabad administration has proposed that all heavy vehicles entering the district from Delhi borders will not be allowed to ply within the city limits from July 31 to August 9 (the procession period).

“The heavy vehicles will be diverted to NH-24 area from UP Gate. However, light vehicles will be allowed till July 3 on one side on NH-58. No traffic will be allowed on NH-58 after July 4,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Capt. M.M. Baig told HT.

An estimated that 20-25,000 heavy vehicles ply everyday on the two national highways.

Those travelling to Meerut on NH-58 will be diverted to NH-24 till Garh Mukteshwar (80 km from Delhi). This will increase the travelling time by 2-3 hours.

The four-lane NH-24,will be heavily clogged, and will witness major traffic snarls. “But this has to be done to maintain law and order and security of the Kanwarias,” Baig said.
