Divorced, raped by husband on wedding night

A woman has accused her husband of divorcing and raping her on their wedding day. The case was reported from northeast Delhi’s Jafarabad on Thursday.

The woman told the police that she got married to one Mohammad Farooq on February 23 in Seemapuri. When she reached her in-laws’ house in New Jafarabad, Farooq and his family started harassing her due to inadequate dowry. “Scared, the woman locked herself in a bathroom and threatened everyone of committing suicide,” said a senior police officer quoting the victim’s complaint.

A worried Farooq then tried to coax her out of the bathroom by promising not to harm her or ask for dowry. It was only when when he took an oath on the Quran and promised not to trouble her that she came out.

“Immediately, Farooq divorced her and she was beaten up by him and his family. He then raped the woman,” the officer said, adding that the woman somehow escaped and reached her parents’ home.

When questioned about the delay in filing a complaint, the woman reportedly said she did not want the case to come out in the open. “But she said she had no other option but to file a case now,” the officer added.

A case of rape has been registered and investigation is on.
