DJB on path to recycle resources

The city’s water utility will sign an MoU with Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) on Tuesday for a pilot project regarding the conversion of biogas produced at its sewage plants to compressed natural gas (CNG). The IGL has received soft loan to utilise the technology developed by a Swedish firm for converting sewage to natural gas.

“The DJB will provide the land required by them,” said a senior DJB official. The natural gas thus produced would be used by IGL for DTC buses, he said.

Further, the DJB has received a proposal from a Singapore firm for converting sewage to potable water. Singapore has had a good track record of such conversion, hence, it has been suggested to try this out on a pilot basis. “The firm will prepare a report. If feasible for Indian conditions, DJB will then float it in open market,” he said.

DJB supplies about 845 MGD per day water tapped from all sources to residents against the demand of 1,080 MGD.

Another project in the pipeline is use of energy-efficient water pumps, for which an MoU would be signed with a Danish firm. "However, it is still being worked out,” he said.
