DMK delegation meets Prez, wants international peackeepers in Lanka

The DMK asked the Centre to approach the UN to investigate the situation in Lanka's Tamil-dominated northern region and for deployment of international peace keeping force in the island nation to maintain peace.

The DMK on Tuesday asked the Centre to approach the United Nations to investigate the situation in Sri Lanka's Tamil-dominated northern region and for deployment of international peace keeping force in the island nation to maintain peace.

PWD Minister and President of Sri Lankan Tamils Welfare and Rights Forum Duraimurugan met President Pratibha Patil along with a delegation and submitted a memorandum to her.

"The situation in Sri Lanka is likely to endanger international peace and security....An international peace keeping force should be deployed in Lanka to maintain peace," he said in the memorandum.

"We thanked Patil for expressing concern over the situation in Sri Lanka and calling for a negotiated settlement in her addresss to the joint sitting of Parliament," he said.

"We want the words to be translated into action," he told reporters.

The Forum also wanted the Human Rights Committee, the Commonwealth and SAARC countries to ask Sri Lankan government to respect international law and human rights and provide equal rights to minority Tamils.
