The government on Friday went out of its way to placate Indian Army chief General VK Singh, urging him not to quit over his age row.

Attorney General GE Vahanvati made the appeal in the Supreme Court, where Gen Singh withdrew his petition seeking to correct his day of birth in official records as May 10, 1951.
Vahanvati told the court that at no stage had the government doubted the army chief's integrity and bonafides.
He said the government's decision to oppose his petition in the court did not reflect on his leadership qualities.
"We have full confidence and faith in his ability to lead the army and we hope and pray that this will not be an end to his service to the nation."
