DU comes out with 3-yr syllabus, teachers unhappy

With a week left for the new session to begin, Delhi University finally released the curricula for students enrolled in the erstwhile four-year undergraduate programme. These students will now study in the three-year mode.

The university has come out with the syllabi for only the third and fourth semesters (second year) for now and is yet to release the syllabus for nine courses.

The papers in the new structure have been picked from Discipline Course 1 and Discipline Course 2 of the FYUP curriculum as recommended by the committee of principals last week. Apart from management studies, which will have four main papers in the second year, all the courses will have three main papers from DC 1 and one or two allied papers picked from DC 2. The number of allied papers will depend on the college.

The syllabus has disappointed the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA). “There is no point of a rollback if the FYUP syllabus is still being taught. Also, the university cannot pass this syllabus without holding an Academic Council meeting. The V-C has engineered this chaos and it is evident that he has not yet accepted the rollback. He should resign,” said Nandita Narain, DUTA president.

On the other hand, the committee of principals, which was a part of the restructuring process, denied the allegations and said the V-C had the emergency powers to pass the syllabus.

“The syllabus is perfect and couldn’t have been formed without taking in the papers from the FYUP curriculum. When this batch of students has already studied one year under FYUP, introducing the 2012 syllabus would have been a disaster,” said SK Garg, principal, Deen Dayal Upadhyay College.

The new academic session is set to start on July 21 and there’s panic among ad hoc teachers who fear they may lose their jobs. “The latest structure has done away with many papers. So the ad hoc teachers will be out of work now,” said a teacher.
