Student will be given a tag as soon as they are enrolled in the university and it can used in place of an admit card, library card or any other membership card. This will also help them track the courses they have chosen, timetable and marks they have scored.

The new system, expected to be operational from next year, is part of the larger process of overhauling of the resources of the university.

It is also expected to meet the requirement of a semester system, which will be introduced from next year.

The semester system will provide students with the option of choosing interdisciplinary courses.

A system like the UIT will help both students and teachers keep track of the various courses and schedules online without going through reams of files and documents.

The students will be provided a smart card which will have an UIT. The number will remain with them for life and even when they have passed out of the university they can track their profile online.

“The introduction of UIT will make things simpler. Students will no longer have to stand in queues for paying fees or getting a membership of a library,” said a highly placed source in the university.

“After the students, even teachers and administrative staff will be eventually issued an UIT to make the functioning of the university simpler and hassle free,” he said.

The idea of UIT was first introduced by the university a year-and-a-half ago. The vice-chancellor had formed an enterprise resource planning committee under which the UIT was to be developed.

A global tender was floated and IT firms such as HCL, TCS and Wipro had applied.

Wipro bagged the contract and is developing the system.

All data transmission between the student and institution will be routed through the tag. Teachers will be able to track attendance, date of admission or the marks of students.
