The accused, Mukesh Singhal, reportedly stopped to ask directions from the girl in Virender Nagar and since it was raining, he insisted on dropping her home, a police officer said.

"You are like a daughter to me," the accused reportedly told the victim.

Singhal runs a carton-manufacturing unit in Hari Nagar.

According to police, Singhal drove around the west Delhi area for a while. Then he stopped his car in a secluded area in Bali Nagar and allegedly raped her.

A passerby heard the victim's cry and reportedly called the police.

"After hearing her cries, locals and motorists caught him. A beat constable also rushed to the spot. The police was called and Singhal was arrested," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal.

The police said the people thrashed Singhal before handing him over to police. The traumatised girl was rushed to a hospital where it was confirmed she was raped.

The police have booked Singhal for rape as well as kidnapping.

The police said Singhal is married with three children, including two daughters aged 14 and 22.
