Residents of Dwarka’s Sector 19 on Sunday blocked traffic and shouted slogans after a youth and his two sisters were allegedly abused by the police. The youth was also manhandled by two other men, allegedly called in by the police.

Pravin Kumar and his sisters were travelling on a motorbike when two traffic policemen stopped them for triple-riding. An argument ensued after which “one policeman called someone and soon two goons came in a car and beat my brother”, alleged Neha Kumari, Pravin’s sister.

“One of the policemen was drunk, he used abusive language too,” Neha and Monika Kanchan, his second sister, told HT. Soon, onlookers gathered and started protesting. Calls made to 100 and to the women’s helpline went unanswered, the sisters claimed.

After almost an hour, more police personnel, including the traffic incharge of the area and two assistant commissioners of police, turned up at the spot. The police took away the injured youth and one of the policemen for medical examination but paid no heed to angry people’s demands.

Vishal Bhardwaj, an eyewitness, claimed: “I saw all this happening as I was right behind the trio. I stopped when I saw they enter into an argument and how the policemen behaved.”

AK Ojha, deputy commissioner of police (southwest), said he was not aware of the matter.

Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic) said two cases had been filed, one by the young man against the traffic police and the other by traffic men against them for obstructing duty. He refuted that his personnel were drunk.
