In order to promote the use of the automatic multi-level parking at Baba Kharak Singh Marg and discourage surface parking, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to deploy e-rickshaws to ply between the parking and the market. These will ensure that shoppers will not have to walk all the way to the market.

Two sets of rickshaws will ply at an interval of five minutes each so that users do not have to wait for a long time.

"The BKS parking is at a distance from CP and many shoppers would like to have a comfortable commute from the parking to the market which is why the rickshaws will be introduced," said a senior NDMC official. Tenders for the project will be floated in August and a new traffic map will be made to accommodate rickshaws.

The parking, which is running for free at present, will be converted into a paid parking as soon as more people get used to the facility. According to NDMC officials, about 500 cars are parked there daily at present. When the number rises to 700 a day, the parking will become a paid one.

The CP e-rickshaw project will be a pilot project of the NDMC. Later connecting rickshaws from the parking to Jantar Mantar and Kasturba Gandhi Marg will be run.

The civic body decided on a rickshaw instead of a small van or bus as the parking lot will have a few passengers at a given time unlike Metro stations which see large crowds.

"If we employ a bus, people using the parking will have to wait till the bus gets filled. Since rickshaws can accommodate about 2-4 people, they will be quicker," added the official.

Currently, 25 e-rickshaws operate between the Malviya Nagar Metro Station and the Select City Walk shopping mall.
