The Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) on Friday told the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that they cannot build more parking sites under green covers besides the nine sites where work is either ongoing or has been awarded.

The civic agency had planned to construct 22 parking lots under parks and green cover in the city due to shortage of available space.

Besides the parking lots at Hauz Khas, Munirka, Model Town, where work has started, and two at Pitampura, Rajouri Garden, New Friends Colony, Saket and Krishna Market, Kalkaji, where work has been awarded, all other projects will have to be put on hold.

“We have directed the MCD not to award work for any other parking project under green cover until we inspect such parking sites and are satisfied with they way the parks have been restored ,” said Bhure Lal, EPCA chairman.

“We have asked the MCD to ensure that the parks are 90 per cent flat; there are green playgrounds with trees on the side. We want to ensure that our direction on restoring the parks are adhered to and MCD complies with our conditions,” Lal said.

“If these parks become unfit for children to play or for plants to grow properly what will happen to the health of the city?” Lal asked.

The EPCA had earlier asked the MCD to ensure that they took the residents of an area into confidence before constructing parking sites there.

“We do not have any open space with us where parking can be created. The project to create parking under green cover is being done in compliance with Masterplan-2021 provisions. We were earlier supposed to create 24 such parking sites but did not get permission for two as they were near protected monuments,” said a source.
