To encourage these students, Prachi Educational Society, an NGO, has decided to felicitate them. “It is a challenge but we are extremely optimistic. Some of the children in the EWS category are very bright academically, especially in subjects such as mathematics and science. We provide extra classes so that they get additional help,” said Rita Sen, principal, Delhi Public School (Rohini).

However, some principals said keeping pace with studies was difficult for such students since English proved to be a barrier. “It has been noticed that these students can cope up till class 2, but thereafter some of them find it difficult to continue the momentum because their ability to understand English and other subjects taught in English becomes a barrier,” said Madhulika Sen, principal, Tagore International School (Vasant Vihar).

Yet, there are other schools which provide remedial English classes and conversation classes to EWS category students.

“We provide remedial English classes, wherein students stay back after school for free English coaching. There is a conversation teacher who teaches them how to speak in English,” said Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School.

However, Ameeta Wattal, principal, Springdales School (Pusa Road), begs to differ. “It is absolutely incorrect to say that English is a barrier. As long as the child can communicate, language is not even an issue.”
