The 96-year-old former Supreme Court judge said in a statement that those opposing the demand were “either unaware of the correct constitutional position or were deliberately misleading the country”.

Justice Iyer said: “...The greatest menace of India today is that the judiciary is corrupt and no action is being taken.” He said the fierce nationwide debate generated on the lokpal has resulted in a strong public opinion that action must be taken against the corrupt.

The senior-most living judge of apex court, justice Iyer said since the Prime Minister was the custodian of the state power, he could not escape public scrutiny.

Pointing out that judiciary acted as a watchdog which scrutinises the decisions of the executive and parliament, it also had to be accountable.
