While the city was enveloped in a heavy spell of rain on Saturday, the Met department said the situation was likely to continue through the week.

“The maximum temperature will remain steady at 34 degrees celsius, while the minimum temperature will remain steady at 26 degrees for this week and on August 15 too. But there is a likelihood of rain and thunderstorms and it will be no different on Independence Day either,” said a Met Department official.

On Saturday, as several parts of the city saw the skies open up, the Met Department said south Delhi received the maximum rainfall, while the average rainfall was recorded at 17.2mm. However, this has spelt bad news for thousands of Delhiites who were looking forward to a festive Independence Day.

“We go to the Red Fort every year and come back and fly kites till evening. Last year too, it had rained and played spoiler. If it rains this year again, it will be very disappointing,” said Muktesh Verma, a resident of Lajpat Nagar.

Yet, for most Delhiites, the intermittent spells of rain came as a blessing.

“Even though it becomes difficult to dry clothes, the season has been so devoid of rain this year that any heavy spell of rain is a blessing,” said Rajni Shukla, a resident of Malviya Nagar.

On Sunday too, the city is likely to experience a spell of rainfall with maximum and minimum temperatures likely to settle at 36 and 27 degrees, respectively.
