At Institute of Liver and Biliary Diseases (ILBS), patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD) comprise a big chunk. Almost 70% of in-patients with liver disease and 15% with liver cancer have ALD. This is congruent to the data worldwide, and says that ALD accounts for 40% deaths from cirrhosis and 30% from liver cancer. The problem, say experts, is only growing because of lack of awareness and few dedicated liver hospitals.

“We are working on collaboration between the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) and the Knowledge Commission and the 1,500 nodes connected through the National Knowledge Network,” said Sam Pitroda, advisor to the prime minister. Pitroda was speaking on the occasion of the second foundation day of ILBS at Vasant Kunj.

“Experts at ILBS should develop innovative solutions such as smart phone applications that contain information about the liver health of the owner,” he said. He also proposed the development of a National Innovation Council for Liver Diseases.

Member of Parliament Dr Karan Singh who also present at ILBS, stressed the need for greater public education in the field of health, and also proposed the launch of a national physical fitness campaign (NPFC).

Congratulating professor SK Sarin, director, ILBS, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit assured continued support for the institute.
