Sharma through his counsel AP Singh, told special judge Yogesh Khanna that he had taken admission in the first year of the BA programme of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in August 2012.

His counsel told the judge that his client was determined to take the examination but IGNOU has not yet sent the examination schedule to him. He said the university should be directed to provide the schedule so that he can prepare for his examination.

Special Public Prosecutor Dayan Krishnan objected to Sharma's application. Krishnan said his parents could collect the date sheet or even his counsel could do the same. Sharma said the university was not giving the schedule and "so it is difficult for me to prepare for my exams".

The judge directed the police to file its response to the plea.
