Govt planning to amend juvenile justice Act

The government today said that it was planning to carry out amendments in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act (JJ Act), including penal provisions for non registration of child care institutions, to make it more suitable for the present conditions.

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, women and child development minister Krishna Tirath gave the details of the proposed amendments.

"Some of the major proposed amendments are penal provisions for non registration of child care institutions under Juvenile Justice (care and Protection of Children) Act, strengthening of the provisions related to adoption, including roles and responsibilities of the Child Welfare Committees and addition of new offences against children etc," she said

Tirath also said that consultations had been held with state governments and their suggestions have been considered by a committee set up to review the juvenile justice act.
