Subramanian, who has worked with the Aam Aadmi Party, says he is not affiliated with the party, but acknowledges that this is a political issue.

“I am not a party member. I was just a volunteer. I have volunteered for AAP, like I have volunteered for many other projects and causes... This has always been a political issue. The fact that Gurmehar was going to a protest march led by AISA, makes this a political issue. It is just that you don’t expect politics in college to be this dirty,” he told HT.

Subramanian found himself in the middle of a Twitter war Wednesday morning.

“Volunteering 4 AAP=u support AAP &run media campaign so y @mehartweets lied on TV that she doesn’t hv political affiliations?” was one barb at Subramanian from a Twitter handle @indianyogi.

He gave it back with this tweet, “That’s like saying my father supports AAP because I support AAP.”

“Don’t paraphrase your political affiliation as Volunteering ..think for a while,” one Shubro Jyoti Halder wrote on Twitter.

Subramanian retorted, “Don’t push your troll agenda by saying ‘think for a while’. People on my timeline are not stupid.”

Another Twitter warrior told Subramanian to head for Pakistan. Pack your bag and move to your favourite country Pakistan! said Gautham whose handle is @inuyashaavatar.

Earlier in the day, Subramanian trained his guns on minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju with a tweet “I hope India feels proud of role models like Kiran Rijiju for setting the gold standards of trolling.”

Speaking to HT, Subramanian described Gurmehar as “emotionally mature”. Subramanian first met Kaur for his peace campaign which used a “selfie-with-a-hand-written-message” format. “During the campaign, I came across this young girl, who displayed the kind of emotional maturity you would not expect at her age. I then decided, she should feature in the video, where she could tell her story,” he said.
