The government, however, has yet to work out a plan to decongest the road. The stretch - from Jhandewalan in Central Delhi to Anand Parbat - has proved to be a tough case to handle for traffic police.

Being one of the important arterial roads, which connects Karol Bagh - one of the busiest commercial hubs - the stretch witnesses huge volume of traffic.

"A lot of heavy vehicles move on this road during the non-peak hours as well. It results in a perennial bottleneck on the road," says a traffic official.

"Crossing nearly two kilometres stretch takes at least 30 minutes. Encroachments add to the problem," said Rajesh Bhasin, a regular commuter on this stretch.

"We have closed all the cuts in the median to ease traffic movement. Some of the roads that merge with this stretch have been made one-way," said a senior traffic police officer.
