With Hindu College ready to start a new short-term course in actuarial sciences, students will now have an edge over their peers in the job market.

This course, officials said, would be left open to all students even though students in the mainstream mathematical courses would directly benefit from the training.

"The course is primarily aimed at enhancing the employability of students in the rapidly growing insurance market. Even though the course is open to all students, it is more suited to those students who are pursuing statistics, economics, BCom or Maths," said Praduman Kumar, principal, Hindu College.

The course is likely to start by August 16 and will be spread out over four months. Exams will be held twice a year —November and May. The course, which will be conducted along with Metlife Insurance Company India Ltd, will also give students the opportunity of hands-on training in the insurance sector through an internship with the organisation.

However, students will necessarily need to pass the exam to be a certified actuarist.

"For any student — even a chartered accountant — it is mandatory to be registered by the parent body. So the exam will be conducted by the Indian Actuaries of India (IAI) and if the student passes the exam, then he/she will be a registered actuary. This is the process that a student needs to follow if they want to become an actuarial scientist," Kumar said.

Students who are looking at taking up the programme said that it would help them gather a stronger foothold when applying for higher education in this particular field.

"Actuarial sciences is in great demand. If a student applies for higher studies abroad, it is always an added advantage to have done such a course because the level of competition at the post graduate level is tremendous," said Anshul Gupta, an aspirant.
