IIT will look into railway security

IIT-Delhi is set to carry out a comprehensive security audit of stations in and around Delhi, report Avishek G Dastidar and Jaya Shroff.

Security arrangements at railway stations are in for a complete makeover as IIT-Delhi is set to carry out a comprehensive security audit of stations in and around Delhi.

The institute, as part of a project, will prepare a set of recommendations for the Indian Railways on the basis of the audit.

"The purpose of railways at its inception was entirely different and the fact that somebody will use it as a target for attacks was never envisaged," said Prof D.T. Shahani, of IIT-Delhi's Instrument Design Development Center, which is carrying out the audit.

"We have a few ideas in mind; it is mostly about using the available resources like CRPF and constables in a more useful way and we are working on solutions," said Shahani. The project may take a few weeks to materialise as, he said, the ministry was in a rush to find solution to the threat issue.

For the last two months the railways have been firming up a blueprint to initiate radical changes in the way stations are protected from unforeseen tragedies.
