"Our top boss E Sreedharan emphasised on saving cost on civil constructions. He told all the directors that attempts would be made to reduce cost through better engineering. Air condition load will go down if the height of buildings are lower," said a senior DMRC official.

The decision was taken during Delhi metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) first meeting on the proposed extension under phase 3 at its headquarters on Wednesday.

"The new stations will be built on low height pillars. However, locations and height of stations are yet to be determined. We will soon start land plan, soil survey and planning of civil structure designing," the official added.

Karkardooma station on the Metro's Anand Vihar branch is the highest station of Delhi metro with a platform height of 19 metres. Rajouri Garden station on Blue line is the second highest station with a height of 17 metres.

Immediately after the much awaited in-principle clearance given to the third phase by the state cabinet on October 11, Delhi Metro had started its groundwork.

The Metro corporation is keen to finish the Rs 21,468 crore project by 2015.

"We are expecting the official approval for the proposed phase by end of December. We are keen to start the project work immediately," said Kumar Keshav, director (Projects) DMRC.
