In U-turn, Metro not to ban drunk commuters

Three days after HT reported that the CISF planned to introduce breathalysers to stop drunks from boarding trains, it has shelved the plan. “We won't stop drunk commuters if they are in their senses or not over drunk,” DIG Udayan Banerjee said.

HT had carried a series of reports on criticism of the plan. The police felt this would mean more people driving drunk.

Following the reports, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation took up the matter with CISF and revised the plan, sources said.

The Metro isn’t completely doing away with alcohol tests. “Breathalysers will be there as deterrents but the Metro won’t be shut to drinkers,” DMRC chief Mangu Singh said.

The CISF says incidents of drunks creating a nuisance on trains has been increasing.
