India Gate shut for R-day parade rehearsal today

A day ahead of the full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day parade that will take place on Wednesday, the traffic police have asked commuters to avoid New and Central Delhi roads. The restrictions will be in place till Wednesday afternoon.

A day ahead of the full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day parade that will take place on Wednesday, the traffic police have asked commuters to avoid New and Central Delhi roads. The restrictions will be in place till Wednesday afternoon.

Motorists will not be allowed on important arterial roads falling between Vijay Chowk and Red Fort.

The rehearsal will start at 9.50 am from Vijay Chowk and pass through Rajpath, India Gate, Tilak Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Netaji Subhash Marg and proceed to the Red Fort Ground.

“Traffic movement will not be allowed between Vijay Chowk and India Gate on Rajpath from 5am to 12.30pm and traffic on Tilak Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Subhash Marg will not be allowed on both directions till the completion of the rehearsal,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

Trains affected

Meanwhile, the railways has decided to suspend rail traffic on Tilak Bridge for 90 minutes — from 10.30 am to noon — on Wednesday and on January 26.

However, the railway level crossing will remain open on Mahatma Gandhi Marg (IP depot). Several trains will be regulated, cancelled and diverted on these two days.

Trains which will be regulated are Kerala Express at New Delhi, Karnataka Express at Hazrat Nizamuddin, Paschim Express at Okhla, Garibrath Express at New Delhi, Uttaranchal Express at New Delhi, Shatabdi at Sahibabad, New Jalpaiguri-New Delhi Express at Ghaziabad, Jan Shatabdi Express at Meerut City, Magadh Express at Ghaziabad and Sridham Express at Tughlakabad. Kashi Vishwanath Express will start after clearance of the parade from New Delhi.

Those slated for diversion are Palwal EMU, two Ghaziabad EMU trains, three Rajdhani Express trains, and Garib Rath. Ghaziabad-New Delhi —Ghaziabad EMU trains have been cancelled.
