Journalism tests report mixed reactions

Students sitting for the journalism entrance exams for two of the five colleges—Lady Sri Ram (LSR) and Delhi College of Art and Commerce (DCAC)—had mixed towards the papers on Thursday.

With more than 520 students for each, the difference of timings, however, allowed the students at both to appear for them at ease.

The examination tested the students on English, General Knowledge and Current Awareness.

The students were asked to write essays on a range of current topics from global meltdown to blogosphere, from corruption in India to the media’s interference in the counter terrorist attacks.

“The essays were very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed writing them”, said Naomi Jose, a student appearing for the LSR journalism Entrance exam.

While essays were a strong point for some, the English section left many of the student baffled.

“There was a question where we had to tick the exact opposite of word given. But since the options were very close it was a tough call”, said Karishma Thukral, a student at the DCAC Journalism entrance.

“Since it is English Journalism, therefore we try to give weightage to students command in English and general awareness.

We expect the students to know the finer nuances of the language,” said MS Rawat, principal DCAC.

The general awareness too, at both the colleges left many of the students scratching their heads.

The media co-coordinator at LSR, Kanika Khandelwal, maintained that Current Awareness is paramount in the entrance, “We hope the aspiring journalists to have an idea of what has been in news currently.”

The duration of the exam at DCAC, however, left many students complaining. “We have been conducting the exam since 1989 and the duration has remained unchanged. The question paper is framed in a manner that can be completed in about an hour,” said the principal.
